NJ 2025 BECOME A REFEREE PROGRAM
This license is open to any first-time official 13 years old or older or someone who is returning to officiating after being away for 3 or more years. Your referee license will cost $165.00 and includes a starter kit uniform. Your license will expire on December 31 of the year you are registered for. You must renew your license annually. Uniform order information will be supplied to you after you attend your in-person class. NJ does not accept entry-level classes from out of state.
This referee license will allow you to officiate any level USSF affiliated travel soccer game as a referee or assistant referee. There are no restrictions on the level of games you can officiate, but Referee assignments are always subject to the licensed USSF Referee Assignor’s discretion. There is no guarantee of game assignments.
To register for a class, you will go to learning.ussoccer.com. Log into the learning.ussoccer.com under the Referee Program. To set up an account, you will use the Sign-Up feature. If you are a returning official, use the LOGIN feature to find your old account. Once logged in to the Referee Program, go to COURSES>Available Courses> First-Time Referees>Go to Course List. Make sure you are registering for a NJ class. Register and Pay. All online training will become available to you once you are registered for a class.
Your entry-level referee training will consist of 3 parts:

You must complete each step in the order listed. You cannot take your in-person class prior to completing your online training nor your field session prior to attending your in-person class sessions. You must register for an in-person session in order to have access to the online training. The online training will be found in your learning.ussoccer.com class registration under the Assignments tab.
PART 1: Online training thru your learning.ussoccer.com account

You must complete your online training by the deadline which is midnight Thursday prior to your scheduled class date.

If you do not complete your online training by the deadline, you will be removed from the class on Friday and emailed. You will be issued a partial refund of $75 and then you can then sign up for another session.

The date of the class you will register for on the learning.ussoccer.com will be the date of your in-person class only.
PART 2: In-person class

Class registration runs 8:30-8:45 am. Class starts promptly at 9:00 am. Late arrivers not permitted to attend. Location and address for your in-person class is listed on your learning.ussoccer.com registration.

No food or drinks are provided. There is a 30-minute lunch break around 12:00 pm.

Information on how to contact Referee Assignors will be provided in the class.

You must bring your signed waiver with you to this class. If you are a minor, an adult must sign the waiver also but does not have to be present at the field session. Waivers can be found posted in your learning.ussoccer.com class you are registered for under Library>Files.
PART 3: In-person field session

Field sessions will require a separate registration at an alternative website. After completion of your in-person class, you will be emailed registration details.

Field sessions run either 9:00 am- 12:00 pm, or 12:30 pm-3:30 pm on the date offered. You will choose 1 session to attend, either the am or pm session for that date.
The deadline for completion of the 5 online training assignments is midnight Thursday prior to your scheduled in-person class date. Your online work can take up to 9 hours to complete everything. We do not give extensions.

Safe Sport Certification (if 18 or older) – approximately 2.5 hours (no additional fee)

Complete and pass the US Soccer Background Check (if 18 or older) ($23.00 additional fee) – Valid for two years. Takes 7-10 days to clear. Your background check must be cleared before you can attend your in-person class. We do not accept any other background checks.
If you do not attend your scheduled in-person class for any reason, or do not complete your online training prior to your deadline and are not permitted to attend your in-person class session, you will be given a partial refund ($55.00 uniform fee and USSF refund of $20.00 registration), and you will have to sign up and pay for another class. Once you attend your in-person class, we DO NOT offer any refunds.

Emails will be sent to all those that attended their in-person session on Monday or Tuesday after your in-person session with dates, locations and instructions on how to register for your field session. If you do not receive your email, make sure to check your SPAM folder.
