How To Become A Referee

Currently in NJ there are two ways one can become a United State Soccer Federation certified referee (we do not handle High School or NISOA/College).  One can take a Grade 9 or Grade 8 Referee Course (referee grades are determined by FIFA/USSF and are completely separate from any school grade). The description and requirements for these courses are below:

Once the attendee has completed the registration process and signed up for a course, they will have reserved a spot in that course that no one else can take. They will receive an e-mail confirming their registration. Thus, we have instituted a NO REFUND policy. No refunds will be issued to those that fail to attend the course. Grade 8 Entry Level Referee

This is the entry level referee course designed for those who wish to start officiating travel soccer games (you can do recreational games as well.) Minimum age, 14 yrs old by the day of the class. The Grade 8 Entry Level class has been revised to include an extra day of field training. Thus, as in the past, the first 2 days will consist of classroom instruction. Classes are held 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM each day. The 3rd day begins in the classroom but moves into a gym or outside onto a soccer field (weather permitting) for approximately 3 hours for a field mechanics clinic. After the field mechanics clinic is completed, attendees move back into the classroom for a review, test (100 question exam is given, 75% is passing), and registration. The hours for the 3rd day are the same as the first 2 days. Attendees should bring lunch each day and should wear appropriate footwear for the 3rd day. Attendees MUST complete all portions of the 3-day course. Missing any part of the course is not permitted, and will require the attendee to repeat the course in its entirety. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The NJSRC sponsors Grade 8 Entry Level Courses (please note that clubs or leagues are no longer sponsoring courses) . Venues and dates will be selected throughout the state and posted on our website under the Becoming A Referee tab.
